Two Births in One Week!

Well, I had a busy week (as did two very special mommas and two incredibly supportive daddies). The first birth lasted 22 hours and ended with a beautiful baby boy latching on immediately and nursing away contentedly. Welcome to the world, Daniel Isaiah Timothy Ower!

The second birth lasted roughly 14 hours and was absolutely perfect! Healthy baby and healthy mama!! Welcome, Tamar Lynn!

Best week of the year – with the exception of my wedding and honeymoon :)

The History Of Birth

This is a great series on the history of birth around the world. Its entitled “The Timeless Way” and features artwork from ancient times through to video of twentieth Century (possibly early twenty-first Century) births. Its super informative and altogether a great peek into the History of Birth. It is split into five parts, all of them lasting roughly 2-8 min.  Continue reading

Cloth Diapering

Cloth diapering can seem really overwhelming in the beginning. This is totally understandable, since cloth diapering is no longer the social norm and most of us have to do a little research to even figure out how it works. For many of us the questions seem to overwhelm the available (and often incredibly confusing) answers:

“What kinds do I need?” “Do I need different sizes?” “How do I clean them?” “What is a good price?” “How many do I need?”

Take heart! Despite the many questions, there are concrete answers. Continue reading

The Essential Ingredient: Doula

This video (created by DONA International, the organization I am working to gain certification through) discusses the purpose and benefits of birth and postpartum doulas, and features scenes including water births, dancing for birth, interviews with DONA International founders and leaders and ancient artwork centering around birth. Get past the first 3 minutes or so, because that’s when it really gets good!

Postpartum Doulas

Ok, a post centering around postpartum doulas is long over-due. In general, there are two different types of doula, a birth doula (like me) and a postpartum doula. Their names essentially explain their specific areas of expertise – birth doulas focus mainly on the birth of the child, though some include in their practice the immediate postpartum and/or one or two postpartum visits (for a summary of the services I provide click here), and postpartum doulas focus on the postpartum period (or the time right after the baby is born). Each type of doula concentrates on a different portion of the mother and her partner’s needs, and in each area it is extremely important for the mother and couple to feel fully cared for and supported.  Continue reading
